Arupadaiveedu Lord Muruga Temples

Arupadaiveedu are six Lord Muruga shrines of  in Tamilnadu, India. Many of the festivals celebrated in these temples are  Thai-Poosam, the Vaikhashi-Vishakham and the Soora-Samharam. Lord Muruga is also is known by many other names, including Senthil, Saravaṇa, Kārttikeya (meaning ‘son of Krittika’ ), Arumugam or Sanmuga (meaning ‘one with six faces’), Kumāra (meaning ‘child or son’), Guhan(meaning ‘cave-dweller’), Skanda (meaning ‘that which is spilled or oozed, namely seed’ in Sanskrit), Subrahmaṇya, Vēlaṇ andSwaminatha.

The six Lord Muruga temples  are:

  • Dandayudapani Temple Palani (120 km west of Madurai), Dindigul district
  • Swamynathaswamy Temple, Swamimalai (Near Kumbakonam),Thanjavur district
  • Subramanya Swamy Temple, Thiruthani (84 km from Chennai), Thiruvallur district
  • Subramanya Swamy Temple, Pazhamudircholai (10 km north of Madurai), Palamudir cholai
  • Bala Subramanyaswamy Temple, Thiruchendur (100 km south of Madurai), Tuticorin district
  • Subramanya Swamy Temple, Thiruparamkunram (10 km south of Madurai), Madurai district

Lord Murugan is more popular in South India and is also worshipped primarily in Singapore , Sri Lanka , Malaysia and Mauritius . In Sri Lanka, Tamils and Buddhists worship a shrine in Katharagama temple (also in Sinhala “Katharagama Devalaya”) dedicated to Lord Muruga .  Similarly Chinese in Penang , Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia also pray Lord Murugan during Thaipusam.
