Janmashtami and Astrological Dating of Krishna’s Birth
Janmashtami will be celebrated all over the world on 13th/14th of August 2009, the eighth day of waning Moon (Krishna Paksha Ashtami) in the luni-solar month of Bhadrapada. The sidereal moon was exalted in Taurus sign (Vrishava Rasi) in Rohini Nakshatra (Constellation) at the time of Krishna’s birth.
Based on the narrations of astrological events in the Shrimad Bhagwat, Shri Vishnu Purana, and the Mahabharata, Krishna’s birth year has been identified to within a narrow range. A shloka in the 38th chapter of the Shri Vishnu Puran states that Kaliyuga started on the day Krishna died.” In Shrimad Bhagwat Purana (part 11, chapter 6), Brahma states Krishna is 125 years of age just at the time of his death. The advent of Kaliyuga is traditionally taken to be 3102 BC, the belief being supported by astronomy treatises, Aryabhattiya (by mathematician Aryabhatta) , the Surya Siddhanta, and a 5th century temple inscription in Aihole, Karnataka. In addition, the rare astronomical happenings of solar and lunar eclipse occurring within a time period of 13 days coinciding with beginning of Mahabharata war has been recently traced to year 3067 BC by NASA astronomical software Lodestar. Based on these calculations, horoscope of Krishna and other astrological event confirmations, Krishna’s birth year is determined lying within the range 3228-3157 BC.
While the exact year of birth will continue to be a subject of research, the day of Janmasthami is a day of celebration. Happy Janmastami to all.
