Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur Pooram 2010 festival will take place on 24th April 2010 this year at Thekkinkadu Maidanam in the heart of Thrissur district.  Thrissur pooram is one of the most famous festival of Kerala with thousands of people  gathering at the Thekkinkadu Maidanam at Thrissur.  Thrissur Pooram festival is held in Vadakkumnatha temple. It is about about 58 km from Thrissur via Cochin International Airport.

The two century old festival involves a procession of caparisoned elephants and percussion performances in an 36 hours marathon display between 6 a.m. to noon the other day. Thrissur Pooram is participated in by people across all barriers of religion and caste. Adhering to the medieval Peruvanam tradition, the festival is confined to the temples of Devi (goddess) and Sastha (divine combination of Shiva and Vishnu). Ten deities from the neighboring temples pay obeisance to the presiding deiety of Thrissur. Principle participants are Paramekkavu and Tiruvambadi, close to the Vadakunnathan temple.

The festival highlights 30 caparisoned elephants and Kudamattom. Chendamelam and Panchavadyam performances are included. Dazzling fireworks light up the sky. Pooram is one of the nakshatras or star in the Hindu panchangam.The Thrissur pooram, is celebrated every year, on the pooram day, in the month of Medam (mid-April to mid-may) month as per the malayalam calendar.
