Jyotish
Jyotish in vedic sciences refers to both astronomy and astrology. It is based on Sidereal Zodiac. In the vedic system, Jyotish has three branches; Siddhanta, Samhita and Hora
- Siddhanta. Sidhhanta deals with Hindu astronomy, computing the motion of planetary bodies, eclipses, calendars etc.. The famous works in this category include Surya-Siddhanta, Aryabhatiya by Aryabhata and Pancha-Siddhantika by Varahamihira.
- Samhita. Samhita deals with what is commonly referred as mundane astrology. It gives predictions of war, earthquakes, political events, financial and agricultural events, omens, Vaastu and many other aspects of society based on planetary movements.
- Hora. Hora deals with astrological predictions of future of an event or nativity based on the time of happening of the event, birth or moment of query. The major classical texts include Brihat Parasara Horasastra, Saravali and BrihatJataka.
Jyotisha is one of the six Vedangas and has been part and parcel of ancient Hindu life from time immemorial. It is always consulted for selecting auspicious moments for success in undertakings.
