Karana Dosham

Karana Dosha (Dosham, Dosh) is given importance in Vedic Astrology as Karana (Karan) is one of the five components of Vedic Panchanga (Panchangam)Karana is half part of the Tithi (date) in Vedic Jyotish. There are two Karanas in one Tithi. The total number of Karana is eleven.

These are

  • BALA
  • BALAVA
  • KAULAVA
  • TAITIL
  • GARA
  • VANIJA
  • VISHTI (Vishti Karana is not considered as an auspicious Karana in astrology)
  • SHAKUNI
  • CHATUSHAPDA
  • NAAGA
  • KIMSTUGHNA

Karana first to seven are termed moveable (Chara) i.e. this can not be fixed in advance related to which dates, these are going to take place, but the last four Karanas are unchanging (Sthira), so can be determined beforehand according to the Vedic Jyotish.

Vishti karana is differently called ‘ Bhadra’ and starting any work in this period is not allowed as per Panchangam due to Karana Dosha.
