Vaisakhi New Year
Vaisakhi ( Baisakhi ) is new year, the first day of Vaisakh month (April-May) according to the Nanakshahi calendar. According to Vedic solar calendar, Baisakhi falls on April 13 every year and on April 14 once in 36 years. In 2010, it falls on April 14th, 2010. It is Sikh New Year and also for farmers of Punjab. Baisakhi is celebrated as ‘Rongali Bihu’ in Assam, ‘Naba Barsha‘ in Bengal, ‘Puthandu’ in Tamil Nadu, ‘Pooram Vishu’ in Kerala and ‘Vaishakha’ in Bihar. Vaisakhi is also Guru Gobind Singh birthday and the foundation of the Khalsa (the Sikh brotherhood) in 1699.
It is celebrated by vaisakhi mela, bhangra and gidda, the folk dance of Punjab. Baisakhi celebrations are vaisakhi nagar kirtan, vaisakhi festival, vaisakhi songs and vaisakhi mela.
