SATURN (Shani, Sani, Shani Deva, Sanideva) is often described as an evil planet. He is a natural malefic. Still he can give exceptionally good results for certain Ascendants if not vitiated. He protects the house he occupies and brings evil results pertaining to the houses he aspects. Position wise he is considered best if placed in the 6th since he then aspects the 8th, the 12th and the 3rd. The general results associated with Saturn require modifications depending on the Ascendant, the sign occupied and aspected by Saturn.

The seven and half years’ period, commonly known as sadesati beginning with the entry of Saturn in the sign preceding the Moon sign and ending with his exit from the sign succeeding the Moon sign, is considered a bad period causing lot of trouble and turmoil to a native. Diseases, defeat, theft, demotion, hunger, litigation, humiliation, imprisonment, monetary loss etc., are attributed to an unfavorable Saturn who is the significator of the 6th, the 8th and the 12th houses. But Saturn also greatly influences the 10th viz., the house of Karma and plays almost a decisive rule in determining career.

Saturn is Yogakaraka for Libra and Taurus Ascendants. When posited in Libra Ascendant in his sign of exaltation, he decides the professional career of the native latest by his 19th year. But for Taurus Ascendant he is also a Badhakadhipati which means that the results associated with the houses occupied or owned by planets in association with Saturn get delayed. Saturn yields good results also for Scorpio and Gemini Ascendants since his Moolairikona sign Aquarius falls in a kona (angle) and trikona (trine) house respectively.

For Virgo Ascendant Saturn becomes the ruler of the 5th house also. He yields good results if posited in the 2nd house in exaltation. For Capricorn and Aquarius Ascendants Saturn becomes a functional benefic by virtue of being the lord of Lagna. For the above Ascendants sadesati period becomes moderate. Furthermore, if Saturn happens to be in exaltation, or in his own sign, then also the evil results commonly attributed to him get considerably minimized. Thus for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius and Pisces Ascendants only Saturn becomes fully capable of giving bad results. In the case of Aries Ascendant, he is Badhakadhipati even though he owns the 10th house. It is a general rule that a planet aspecting his own house enhances the results of that house. This rule applies to Saturn also. Thus, Saturn when posited in Aries Ascendant, still enhances the 10th house even though he is in debility. If such a Saturn is aspected by strong Jupiter the native takes to noble means for earning his livelihood. If a benefic planet, viz., Jupiter, Venus or unafflicted Mercury is posited in the 10th house from Saturn the person will make his living by adhering to noble means. He may be a preceptor, dealer in luxury goods, a banker or a businessman. If Saturn is afflicted by Mars, or is in direct opposition to the Sun and devoid of Jupiter influence, the native makes his living by coming in contact with low people and by using a clandestine approach.

In order that a person be involved with the masses and be worldly, Saturn’s association with the 10th house in some form is very desirable, otherwise the native becomes an introvert and develops a tendency of living in isolation. In extreme cases he may even become a hermit. For political success ‘t is essential that Saturn should favorably influence the 10th house and the Sun should be strong. Saturn posited in the 10th house may bring about many ups and downs in one’s professional career.

The nature of profession is determined by the lord of the Navamsa sign occupied by the 10th lord. Saturn as lord of the 10th house for Aries and Taurus Ascendants bestows an honorable profession when he occupies the Navamsa of the Sun, the Moon and Mars even though these planets are inimical to him. This is so because for Aries Ascendant these planets arc yogakarakas being the rulers of the 5th, the 4th and the 1st respectively. If the Sun is strong and Saturn is in his Navamsa the native gets patronage from the state. If Saturn is in the Navamsa of the Moon, who happens to be in an earthly sign, the native is a dealer in landed property, a contractor or an agriculturist. If Saturn is in the Navamsa of Mars, the native enjoys executive powers, he may be a magistrate, a police officer or a commander in the armed forces. Saturn when posited in the Navamsa of a strong Mercury associated with the Sun, makes the native a thinker. He takes to the profession of teaching when Jupiter is posited in the 7th house which is 10th from the 10th house. The presence of Saturn in the Navamsa of Jupiter causes no Yoga even though Jupiter owns the 9th house. Similarly a combination of Jupiter and Saturn for Aries Lagna confers no Dharmakarmadhipati Yoga. This is due to the Badaka nature of Saturn. In Venus Navamsa, Saturn is indicative of engineering, architecture, tailoring or running of brothels in case Venus is afflicted by Mars.

For judging success or failure in Career presence of certain Yogas should be kept in mind. For example, association of the lords of a kendra (angle) and a trikona (trine) either by combination, mutual aspect or through exchange of houses is a plus point for professional success. On the other hand the absence of good Yogas and the presence of bad ones such as the Kalasarpa, Kemadruma and Dainya Yogas makes the native struggle for professional success.
